The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has demanded that Thakur Prasad Dangi, a protester who died after being injured during a police crackdown on a demonstration in Kathmandu on April 9th, be declared a martyr. Dangi, from Bardiya, succumbed to injuries sustained from a police baton (lathi) charge while undergoing treatment at a military hospital in Chhauni.
The RPP condemns the use of force against peaceful protesters exercising their constitutional rights, calling the killing of civilians “cowardice and a mockery of democracy.” The party urges the government to declare Dangi a martyr and provide compensation to his family.
The clash on April 9th saw police use batons, water cannons, and tear gas against RPP demonstrators. Spokesperson Mohan Kumar Shrestha reports approximately 50 injuries, with six people still hospitalized and requiring surgery.
The RPP will fly its flag at half-mast across all 77 district offices for three days and hold condolence meetings on the 13th day of Dangi’s passing.
