KATHMANDU, NEPAL – The Crime Investigation Bureau (CIB) will present Krishna Bahadur Mahara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives and vice-chairman of the CPN (Maoist Center), to the Kathmandu District Court on Friday. He faces a continued investigation into his alleged involvement in a gold smuggling case.
Mahara was arrested in Bhairahawa earlier this week. The Kathmandu District Court granted police a four-day custody extension for the investigation. However, Mahara’s medical condition required his hospitalization at Norvic Hospital, where he continues to receive treatment under police supervision.
Mahara has already provided a statement to the public prosecutor’s office. He maintains his innocence in the gold smuggling case.
Mahara’s arrest stems from a high-level government inquiry into large-scale gold smuggling. The investigation uncovered potential links between Mahara and the smuggling ring. Authorities will now present Mahara before the court to determine the next steps in his legal proceedings.
