After a period of rising heat, a significant weather change has brought rain, wind, and a drop in temperatures across Nepal. In Terai regions such as Biratnagar, Dharan, and Janakpur, where temperatures previously exceeded 30 degrees Celsius, the maximum temperature has now dipped to 26-27 degrees. Western Terai is also experiencing cooler weather, with maximum temperatures below 30 degrees.
Hilly areas have seen a sharp decline, with maximum temperatures ranging between 12-20 degrees Celsius. Even Kathmandu, the capital, now has maximum temperatures of around 23 degrees. While afternoons may feel warmer, mornings and evenings are decidedly chilly.
Meteorologists predict further cooling with chances of rain and thunderstorms continuing through Sunday. The Weather Forecast Division advises light rain is possible in hilly regions, including the Kathmandu Valley. While the weather may clear in the afternoon, the potential for rain remains.
Lumbini, Karnali, and Sudurpaschim could see rainfall today. Parts of Koshi, Madhesh, Bagmati, and Gandaki received precipitation yesterday and today, with Madhesh and Koshi experiencing the heaviest rainfall.
Though rain may subside in Madesh province today, Koshi, Madhesh, and Bagmati could see some rain tomorrow. Kathmandu Valley and other areas have already received light overnight rain and continue to experience precipitation this morning. High-altitude regions have received snowfall.
The weather change is attributed to a western low-pressure system combined with the influence of a low-pressure system near India’s Bihar region.
