Nepal’s Water Resources Engineers Protest Over Job Cuts

Sub-engineers working in Nepal’s water resources and irrigation department have launched a protest after they were put on excess, citing unfair treatment by the government.

The protesting sub-engineers claim that the new organizational and management structure of the department has resulted in a 65% cut in staff, with 167 sub-engineers being put on excess.

They argue that despite being permanent employees like nayab subba (nayab subba is a permanent position in the Nepali government), they have been unfairly put on excess.

The sub-engineers have been staging a sit-in protest outside the Ministry of Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation in Kathmandu for the past four days.

As part of the protest, Energy, Water Resources and Irrigation Minister Viraj Bhatta has called a meeting with some representatives of the protesting employees to discuss their concerns.
