Africa’s aviation powerhouse, Ethiopian Airlines, has seen its former CEO, Tewolde GebreMariam, appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of India’s national carrier, Air India.
Tewolde will succeed current CEO Campbell Wilson and take on the challenge of transforming Air India, which has been facing numerous challenges, including modernizing its fleet, improving operational reliability, and restoring customer trust.
A Proven Track Record
Tewolde’s appointment comes after his successful tenure at Ethiopian Airlines, where he led the airline to become one of the most successful in Africa, with a four-fold increase in revenue and a three-fold increase in fleet size.
Under his leadership, Ethiopian Airlines expanded rapidly across Africa and the world, establishing Addis Ababa as a major aviation hub. The airline also achieved significant growth in cargo services and established a strong maintenance and training infrastructure.
Tewolde’s experience in navigating the airline through major crises, including the Boeing 737 MAX crash and the COVID-19 pandemic, has earned him recognition as one of the most successful airline executives of his generation.
Challenges Ahead
However, Tewolde faces significant challenges at Air India, which has been struggling with debt, operational issues, and intense competition from Gulf carriers. The airline has also been criticized for its aging fleet and poor customer service.
Despite these challenges, Air India’s new ownership structure, with Tata Group holding 74.9% and Singapore Airlines holding 25.1%, provides a strong foundation for Tewolde to implement his vision and turn the airline around.
With a strong track record of success and a proven ability to navigate complex challenges, Tewolde is well-positioned to lead Air India’s transformation and restore the airline to its former glory.
