Nepal’s Supreme Court Orders Re-Hearing of Congress Dispute

Nepal’s Supreme Court has ordered a re-hearing of the dispute within the Nepali Congress party from the beginning.

The full bench of the Supreme Court, comprising Chief Justice Manoj Kumar Sharma and Justices Nityananda Pandey and Shrikant Paudel, granted permission for the re-hearing on Thursday.

The court’s decision comes after a petition was filed seeking a review of the Supreme Court’s earlier verdict on the issue. The Election Commission had also been restrained by the court from taking any action.

Background of the Dispute

The dispute within the Nepali Congress party had led to a split, with one faction led by Gagan Kumar Thapa and the other by Sher Bahadur Deuba.

The Thapa-led faction had formed a new central committee on December 29, without the presence of the other faction, and had been recognized by the Election Commission.

However, the Deuba faction had refused to accept the Thapa-led committee and had approached the Supreme Court, seeking a review of the Election Commission’s decision.

The court’s decision to re-hear the case from the beginning is seen as a significant development in the ongoing dispute within the Nepali Congress party.
