Nepal’s Minister of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, Sobita Gautam, has clarified that the National Service Corps is not a semi-military structure.

Addressing a meeting of the State Affairs and Good Governance Committee under the House of Representatives on Thursday, Minister Gautam said the National Service Corps Bill, 2083, aims to develop the physical and mental strength of students from school to plus two levels.

Gautam emphasized that the program, which has been in operation since 2022, is not a new practice but a continuation of historical tradition. She recalled that the program was initiated with the objective of preparing dedicated and disciplined youth for national service since the Panchayat era.

The minister explained that the program provides training to students in various fields, including moral education, discipline, music, dance, physical fitness, sports, disaster risk reduction, and cultural conservation. She expressed confidence that the program would help develop a sense of discipline and social responsibility among the youth.

The National Service Corps Bill, currently under discussion in the State Affairs Committee, aims to cover students from school to college levels, focusing on their personality development and operation in the national interest.
