KATHMANDU, Nepal – In a significant move to address the environmental degradation of the Bagmati River, the government has announced plans to construct water recharge centers around the Kathmandu Valley. This initiative, outlined in the policies and programs for the upcoming financial year 2081/82, aims to ensure a consistent flow of water in the river even during the dry season.

The Bagmati River, considered sacred by many, has suffered from pollution and reduced water levels in recent years. The government seeks to rectify this by enhancing the river’s environment and building essential infrastructure.

President Ram Chandra Paudel, in his address to Parliament, emphasized the importance of waste classification and announced the formation of a stakeholder-driven mechanism to resolve the long-standing issue of the Banchare Danda landfill site. This move is expected to complement the water recharge centers by reducing pollution and improving the overall health of the river ecosystem.

The construction of water recharge centers is crucial in revitalizing the Bagmati River. These centers will collect and store rainwater during the monsoon season, releasing it gradually during the dry months to maintain a steady flow in the river. This will improve the river’s aesthetic appeal, support aquatic life, and enhance the surrounding environment.

The government’s commitment to improving the Bagmati River’s condition is a welcome development for environmentalists and residents alike. The initiative is expected to have a positive impact on the region’s ecology, tourism, and overall quality of life.
