Kathmandu Metropolitan City is moving to improve traffic flow and potentially pedestrian safety by banning parking on public roads within the city limits. This regulation is included in the Economic Act recently brought forth by the Kathmandu Metropolitan City and will go into effect at the beginning of the next fiscal year, which starts on July 16, 2024.
While on-street parking will be prohibited, the new legislation does make provisions for alternative parking options. The Act allows for the use of land owned by public entities for parking purposes, but only with their express permission and after a formal agreement is reached between both parties. Additionally, Kathmandu Metropolitan City will be managing its own designated parking areas and will offer free parking for the first two hours to incentivize their use.
