Nepal MP Questions State Sensitivity Amid Reports of Poor Couple’s Desperate Act

A member of Nepal’s parliament has raised concerns over the government’s sensitivity towards its citizens, citing the case of an elderly couple who took their own lives due to lack of access to medical treatment.

Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP) MP Amresh Kumar Singh expressed his views on Facebook, referring to the incident in which Kedarnath Parajuli and his wife from Kavrepalanchok district jumped into the Sun Koshi river after being unable to afford cancer treatment for the wife.

‘If it is true that the couple from Kavre took their own lives by jumping into the Sun Koshi river due to lack of treatment, it is a shame for the state,’ Singh wrote, ‘It is not an easy decision for a couple to take their own lives together just because the wife could not get cancer treatment.’

Singh pointed out that poor people in Nepal are struggling with various problems, including lack of access to medical treatment, employment opportunities, and basic necessities like cooking gas and fertilizers for farmers.

‘The poor are not getting medical treatment, housewives are not getting cooking gas, youths are not getting employment, farmers are not getting fertilizers, and people in rural areas are not even getting basic medicines like paracetamol,’ he wrote, ‘How is the state mechanism functioning? Doesn’t the state need to be sensitive towards this?’
