Following an increase in tiger and leopard activity in human settlements and surrounding areas, the Division Forest Office in Chitwan has begun monitoring their movements by installing cameras and traps.
According to Forest Officer Sudip Hamal, cameras have been set up in Avinas Poultry Farm in Bharatpur Metropolitan City-15 to track the big cats, while another camera has been installed in nearby Bansjhyan.
In a recent incident, a leopard cub was rescued from a trap set up in the poultry farm and taken to the National Trust for Nature Conservation in Sauraha.
Footage from the camera trap showed the mother leopard and another cub waiting outside the trap. It is believed that they may have moved to the nearby campus of the Agriculture and Forestry University.
Campus officials have also reported setting up traps and cameras to monitor wildlife activity in the area.
In another incident, a tiger was spotted in the Aaptari area of Bharatpur Metropolitan City-11, where it had killed a goat. A team led by Chief District Officer Ganesh Aryal, along with security personnel and forest officials, conducted a site visit and installed cameras at the entrance and inside the office.
According to officials, arrangements have been made to rescue any tigers or leopards that may be trapped in the area.
Wildlife experts believe that physically weak tigers and leopards may venture out of the forest to protect their cubs from other wild animals. However, this can sometimes lead to conflicts with humans, especially when they attack domestic animals.
