Biratchowk, Nepal – Yam Lal Kandel, leader of the CPN-UML party, has been appointed as the new Chief Minister of Karnali Province. Kandel’s appointment was confirmed on Tuesday afternoon by Provincial Chief Minister Tilak Pariyar.
Kandel takes over the position from Rajkumar Sharma, who resigned last Wednesday. The new Chief Minister secured the position with the support of 23 MPs representing a coalition of the CPN-UML, Maoist Centre, and CPN-S parties. This coalition surpasses the 21-seat majority required within the 40-member state assembly.
Kandel’s appointment comes after Provincial Chief Tilak Pariyar issued a 7-day deadline for the formation of a new government following Sharma’s resignation.
