Prime Minister Dahal of Nepal seeks a new coalition

March 4, 2024

According to Govinda Acharya, a spokesman for Dahal, the Prime Minister is thinking about appointing members of the Rastriya Swotantra Party (RSP) and the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) to the cabinet. The action comes after the Nepali Congress’s restrictions were criticized by Dahal’s Maoist Centre party, the third-largest in the legislature.

Although UML leader Pradeep Gyawali said that he would back Dahal if he broke with the Nepali Congress, the RSP has not yet stated what its position is.

Citing worries over his performance in the growing economy of the nation, the prime minister is eager to remove several ministers, most notably Finance Minister Prakash Sharan Mahat of the Nepali Congress. Mahat responds by claiming that the economy has improved.

There is also a disagreement about who should lead the National Council, which is an important legislative body. The Maoist Centre and the Nepali Congress are fighting for the job.

Bishwa Prakash Sharma, the general secretary of the Nepali Congress, said that the matter is being debated inside the party as the coalition with the Maoists confronts difficulties.

Dahal, who is renowned for spearheading an insurgency for ten years until 2006, is negotiating Nepal’s political environment, which has seen several changes in the administration since the monarchy was abolished in 2008.
