Chief Minister Hikmat Kumar Karki of Province 1 has managed to retain his position after a meeting with CPN-UML Chairman KP Sharma Oli in Kathmandu. The development has led to a new round of power dynamics in the province, with the UML and the CPN (NCP) engaging in formal talks for a new power-sharing deal.
The talks between the two parties began after the NCP decided to join the provincial government, while the Nepali Congress is preparing to exit. The new power-sharing deal is expected to be finalized by next Monday, according to NCP parliamentary party leader Indra Bahadur Angbo.
Angbo said that the two parties have agreed to work together to achieve common goals and that the new government will not follow the old pattern. He also stated that the budget for the province, which was recently introduced, will be revised according to the priorities of the new power-sharing deal.
The meeting between the UML and the NCP was attended by UML Secretary and Province 1 in-charge Sher Dhan Rai, NCP parliamentary party leader Angbo, and other leaders. The Nepali Congress, which is currently part of the provincial government, has decided to exit the government.
Former Infrastructure Development Minister Pradeep Kumar Sunuwar said that the party will make way for the new power-sharing deal, taking into account the technical and legal aspects of Article 168 (5) of the constitution.
The development has also led to a rift within the UML, with some leaders criticizing the party’s decision to retain Chief Minister Karki. UML Secretary Rai has denied allegations that he was involved in a bid to oust Karki, stating that he had only followed the instructions of party chairman Oli.
The new power dynamics in Province 1 are expected to have significant implications for the political landscape of the country. The UML and the NCP have agreed to work together to achieve common goals, and the new government is expected to prioritize the development of the province.
