Nepal’s HDI Jumps 0.010 Points, Outpacing Global Average

Nepal’s Human Development Index (HDI) reached 0.601 in 2023, marking a significant 0.010 point increase from 2021, according to a new United Nations Development Program (UNDP) report. This progress has propelled Nepal three positions higher in the global HDI ranking, now placing the country at 146th out of 193 countries and territories.

Key Findings:

  • Nepal now falls within the “Medium Human Development” category.
  • The 0.010 increase in HDI value surpasses the global average of 0.004.
  • Between 1990 and 2022, Nepal’s HDI value increased by 52.2%.
  • Improvements were noted in life expectancy, expected years of schooling, and mean years of schooling.
  • Nepal’s Gross National Income (GNI) per capita increased by 165.7% since 1990.
