The official Facebook page of the renowned Nepali rock group ‘1974 AD’ was the victim of a cyber attack late Tuesday night. A hacker group calling themselves the ‘Cyber Criminal Force’, claiming to be composed of Bangladeshi Muslim hackers, appears to have gained control of the band’s Facebook page around 9 pm.
With nearly 121,000 followers, 1974 AD’s page was bombarded with over 32 posts in Bengali and English within just an hour after the breach. The hackers conducted a Facebook Live stream during their hijacking and also changed the page’s cover photo and profile picture.
In a concerning move, the hackers followed their accounts from the 1974 AD’s page and began posting indiscriminately on the page’s wall. Band members Nirakar Yakthumba, Manoj Kumar KC, Sanjay Shrestha, and others have yet to publicly address this security breach of their popular Facebook presence.
The motives behind this cyber attack remain unclear, though it represents a disconcerting instance of social media vulnerability for public figures and organizations. As details continue to unfold, concerns grow about protecting online platforms from illegal hacking activities.
