Nepal PM’s Border Dispute Remarks Spark Protests in Parliament

Nepal’s Prime Minister Balendra Shah has faced criticism from opposition lawmakers for his handling of a border dispute with neighboring India.

Lawmaker Dhruvaraj Rai from the Labor Party has been leading the protests, demanding a response from the Prime Minister on the issue. Raising the issue in parliament, Rai said that despite his repeated demands for a response, the Prime Minister has failed to provide a satisfactory answer.

Rai expressed frustration, stating that the public has been discussing the issue and questioning the government’s stance. He urged the Speaker of the House, the Prime Minister, and other leaders to provide a clear explanation on the matter.

Background of the Dispute

The border dispute between Nepal and India has been ongoing, with both countries claiming ownership of certain territories. In a previous address to parliament on Jestha 17, Prime Minister Shah had stated that the Nepalese government had officially informed the Indian government about the dispute and was awaiting a response.

He also mentioned that Nepal had discussed the issue with the British government, as the problem was inherited from the British colonial era. Additionally, Shah acknowledged that Nepal had also encroached upon Indian territory in some areas.

The opposition parties have been seeking clarification on the Prime Minister’s statements, but their demands have gone unheeded for over two months. Today, they again raised the issue in parliament, with lawmakers Chandramohan Adhikari, Yuvraj Dulal, and Khushbu Oli, among others, demanding a response from the Prime Minister.
