The Nepal National Oppressed Students’ Union has submitted a memorandum to the National Dalit Commission, demanding the resumption of free civil service preparation classes for Dalit students.

The union expressed dissatisfaction with the suspension of the free classes, which had been running in the past, and stated that the program had provided significant support to students in competitive exams.

The memorandum, submitted by a team led by President Bishnu Uperkoti, also demanded the implementation of Article 40 (2) of the Constitution, which guarantees scholarships and free education to Dalit students from primary to higher education.

However, the union pointed out that the provision has not been implemented effectively.

The union also drew attention to the problems faced by Dalit students in finding accommodation in Kathmandu and the need for a safe and respectful environment for them.

‘We urge the authorities to ensure that Dalit students can access safe and respectful accommodation without facing racial discrimination,’ the memorandum stated.

The union also demanded effective investigation and legal action against incidents of racial discrimination and untouchability in rental accommodations, and the development and implementation of policies for safe accommodation for Dalit students.
