Nepal’s Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supplies is taking steps to balance the increasing demand for cooking gas and its supply, according to Minister Gauri Kumari Yadav.
Responding to questions raised by lawmakers during a meeting of the House of Representatives, Minister Yadav said that the ministry has initiated necessary simplifications and market monitoring to prevent a shortage of gas.
She urged consumers not to buy more gas than needed and not to follow rumors and misinformation. The minister explained that although gas imports have increased compared to last year, the market has seen an imbalance between demand and supply after the government started providing full cylinders instead of half cylinders.
Gas Industry and Supply
Minister Yadav stated that there are currently 58 LPG gas industries in operation, with a total storage capacity of 10,166 metric tons and a daily filling capacity of 1.75 million gas cylinders.
She said that the ministry has directed the relevant agencies to implement the instructions of the parliamentary committee and has started the necessary technical work with the Nepal Oil Corporation to track LPG gas cylinders.
Import and Distribution
Minister Yadav revealed that diplomatic efforts are underway to increase the quota for gas imports from India for the next three months due to the increased demand.
She said that the ministry has given priority to household consumers, and gas is being sold and distributed in a systematic manner, with records of the buyer’s name, address, and contact number. Priority is also being given to senior citizens, people with disabilities, and those with chronic illnesses.
