Nepal Celebrates 32nd World Indigenous Day with Cultural Rally

Nepal observed the 32nd World Indigenous Day on Sunday with a special programme organized by the Nepal Federation of Indigenous Nationalities (NEFIN) in Kathmandu.

The event, held under the slogan ‘Protection of Rights Achieved, Our Collective Commitment to Inclusive and Just Nepal with Identity’, featured a cultural rally that showcased the traditional attire, music, dance, and cultural heritage of various indigenous communities.

The rally, which began at Bhrikutimandap, passed through various parts of the city, including Bhadrakali, Sahid Gate, Sundhara, and Bir Hospital, before culminating at Khulamanch.

Cultural Performances and Exhibitions

The main event at Tundikhel featured various cultural performances, including traditional dances, songs, and music, as well as exhibitions of handicrafts, local products, and cultural artifacts.

According to NEFIN, the event saw the participation of thousands of indigenous people from various districts, including Kathmandu Valley, as well as high-ranking government officials, politicians, diplomats, civil society members, human rights activists, academics, artists, and media personnel.

Significance of World Indigenous Day

World Indigenous Day, observed on August 9 every year since 1994, provides an opportunity to raise awareness about the history, language, culture, traditional knowledge, and rights of indigenous communities at the national and international levels.

NEFIN emphasized that the effective implementation of rights guaranteed by the constitution, proportional inclusive representation, education in mother tongues, rights to land and natural resources, and the preservation of cultural heritage remain crucial issues for indigenous communities.

The event also featured a food festival and an exhibition of traditional cuisine, handicrafts, and cultural artifacts.
