In the hills of Nepal’s Panchthar district, a different kind of threat has emerged for farmers. Monkeys, which have long been a nuisance in the region, have become a major problem for those trying to grow crops.
Shivaprasad Ghimire, a farmer from Lumangdin, says he has been struggling to protect his maize crop from the marauding monkeys. ‘I have built two huts near my field to keep watch, but the monkeys are too clever,’ he says. ‘They come in large groups and destroy the crop.’
Ghimire’s is not an isolated case. Many farmers in the region have been complaining about the monkey menace, which has become a major headache for the local authorities. The monkeys have not only been destroying crops but also attacking people who try to shoo them away.
The problem has become so severe that some farmers have started to abandon their fields. ‘We have tried everything to keep the monkeys away, but nothing seems to work,’ says Kaviraj Raghmi, a local farmer. ‘We have even tried playing loud music, but the monkeys just don’t seem to care.’
The local administration has been trying to address the issue, but so far, no solution has been found. ‘We have been trying to find ways to keep the monkeys away, but it’s not easy,’ says Hemchandra Raghmi, the head of the local village council. ‘We need the help of the government to solve this problem.’
The monkey menace has become a major issue in the region, with many farmers struggling to make ends meet. ‘We are not just losing our crops, but also our livelihoods,’ says Hastabahadur Bohora, a local farmer. ‘If the government doesn’t do something to help us, we will be forced to leave our homes and move to the cities.’
The problem is not limited to Panchthar district alone. Many other districts in the region have been affected by the monkey menace, with farmers struggling to protect their crops. The issue has become a major challenge for the government, which needs to find a solution to address the concerns of the farmers.
