A new master plan for the Kathmandu Valley’s urban transportation system has been unveiled, aiming to ease traffic congestion and improve public transportation in the region. The plan, developed with technical assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), proposes the development of a high-capacity public transportation system, including a metro rail line from Ratna Park to Bhaktapur.
The plan, which is expected to cost over NPR 200 billion, also includes the construction of a 14.6-kilometer-long underground metro line and a 15.62-meter-long two-lane tunnel in the Chabahil-Gaushala area. Additionally, the plan proposes the development of a bus rapid transit system and the expansion of existing roads.
The plan has identified three potential routes for the metro rail line, including the Ratna Park-Bhaktapur route, which has been prioritized for further study. The plan also proposes the integration of the metro rail line with bus rapid transit systems and the development of a pedestrian-friendly and safe public transportation system.
The plan has been developed taking into account the growing population of the Kathmandu Valley, which is expected to reach 4.2 million by 2050. The plan aims to provide a sustainable and efficient public transportation system that can meet the needs of the growing population.
The plan has been welcomed by experts, who say that it is a step in the right direction towards addressing the traffic congestion and public transportation needs of the Kathmandu Valley. However, they also caution that the plan’s success will depend on its effective implementation and the availability of necessary resources.
