The Revolutionary Guard of Iran has warned that the Strait of Hormuz will remain closed until all of Tehran’s conditions are met, including compensation for war damages.
The strait, crucial for the global economy, has been effectively blockaded by Iran since the end of February, following attacks by the US and Israel.
Iran seeks to impose tolls on traffic and has been attacking ships attempting to navigate through the strait, which was previously open to free passage.
Conditions for Reopening
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi stated that discussions with Oman regarding traffic and strait management were in the ‘final stages’. However, he emphasized that reopening the strait depends on ‘other conditions and compensation for violations of the agreement’.
Araqchi denied that Iran was in direct talks with the US, saying they were only exchanging messages through mediators.
Security Chief’s Demands
Iran’s security chief, Mohammad Baqer Zolghadr, presented a list of demands on Saturday for the reopening of the strait, including an end to the war and attacks against Iran and its allies, Lebanon, Palestine, Yemen, and Iraq.
He also demanded the lifting of US sanctions, the return of seized assets, and compensation for war damages, according to Tasnim News Agency.
The Revolutionary Guard stated on Sunday, ‘Iran’s strategy is to keep the Strait of Hormuz closed until the enemy accepts all our conditions. This strait is no longer just a waterway for us, but a battlefield.’
