In Bhaktapur’s Madhyapur Thimi Municipality-8, the historic Kamal Pokhari (also known as Palacewan Pukhu) has seen a resurgence of life, with its iconic lotus flowers blooming in abundance this year.
The 300-year-old pond, which had been facing threats of encroachment and pollution, has been protected and preserved through the efforts of the local government and community.
According to tradition, the lotus flowers from Kamal Pokhari are used in various cultural and religious ceremonies, including the Dashain festival, where they are offered to the goddess Durga at the nearby Bode Laku Darbar.
The pond’s revival is a significant achievement, given its history of neglect and abuse. Just four decades ago, the land was registered in the name of an individual, but a court ruling four years ago declared it a public property, bringing it under government ownership.
