Former Judge Bhuwan Giri Sent to Prison

April 15, 2024
Bhuwan Giri

Kathmandu, Nepal – Former judge Bhuwan Giri, convicted of marital rape, surrendered to the district court in Kathmandu and has been subsequently imprisoned. Chandra Prasad Panthi, information officer of the District Court, confirmed his incarceration.

This follows the April 3rd ruling by the Supreme Court bench of judges Hari Phuyal and Til Prasad Shrestha, which overturned the previous bail orders from the Kathmandu District Court and Patan High Court. Giri’s surrender comes amidst ongoing protests by his wife, Aarti Rawal, who had been on a hunger strike demanding his arrest.

Aarti Rawal initiated legal proceedings in November 2022, accusing Giri of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and unnatural intercourse.
