Abhishek Giri has been remanded in custody for four days by the Morang District Court for further investigation in a cheating and criminal breach of trust case.
Giri was arrested by the police on Thursday from Kathmandu and brought to Biratnagar. According to Hem Bahadur Budhathoki, information officer at the Morang District Court, Giri has been given a four-day extension from the date of his arrest.
Giri has been in police custody since Ashar 13. He was arrested after it was found that he had embezzled funds meant for the distribution of warm clothing allowance to prisoners at the Morang Jail.
On Ashar 23, the Morang District Court had ordered Giri to be released on bail for investigation. On the same day, the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of the Nepal Police had arrested Giri on charges of cheating and criminal breach of trust.
A few days ago, Dilip Kumar Chaudhary had filed a complaint against Giri at the Morang District Police Office, accusing him of cheating while buying a petrol pump. Giri was arrested based on this complaint.
Based on the CIB’s investigation, a case was filed against Giri at the Kathmandu District Court on Shrawan 14, accusing him of embezzling Rs 21.32 million. The Kathmandu District Court had ordered Giri to be released on a bail of Rs 500,000.
Giri had been released from jail on the condition that he would not leave the country. He was released after a guarantee from construction businessman Subhash Shrestha.
