YouTube Announces Layoffs

Google-owned YouTube is reportedly downsizing its workforce, with at least 100 employees expected to be affected by its creator management and operations teams. The announcement was made internally by YouTube Chief Business Officer Mary Ellen Coe, who shared the news in a memo obtained by Tubefilter.

The restructuring plan involves bringing together content creator management teams under dedicated central leadership in each country, according to the reports. Coe emphasized that these changes are part of an effort to streamline YouTube’s business operations in response to the evolving landscape of content creation.

While specific details about the number of employees affected remain undisclosed, Coe highlighted the ongoing diversification of YouTube’s creator base. “As we have seen in the past few years, our creator base is broadening and diversifying, from our most experienced creators to a new generation of casual creators posting on YouTube for the first time,” Coe wrote in the internal memo.

Coe expressed optimism about the future, noting that “Gen AI tools will further fuel new forms of creativity and bring even more creators to the platform.” Simultaneously, she acknowledged the positive momentum in YouTube’s subscription businesses, driven by partnerships with music, sports, and media companies.

In addition to the changes in the creator management and operations teams, YouTube’s music and support teams are reportedly undergoing a reorganization as part of the broader restructuring efforts.

While addressing the affected employees, Coe assured them that opportunities to apply for other roles within YouTube would be made available. However, it was not explicitly stated whether these employees are guaranteed new positions within the company.
