Taiwan is considering buying 6 million metric tonnes of liquefied natural gas per year from an energy development project that will be located in Alaska and can invest as much as $4.4 billion in the project, according to the Ministry of Economic Affairs of Taiwan.
US President Donald Trump called the deal “one of the biggest deals ever made.” The project may be beneficial for the expansion of US energy sales to Asia and diversification of Taiwan’s sources of natural gas. Nevertheless, further terms of the deal need to be negotiated by the two sides.
This decision was made amid the situation when Taiwan tries to preserve its friendly relations with the US due to the increased military pressure from China. The US is the main foreign arms supplier to Taiwan and the only unofficial ally of the island in the international affairs, whereas China considers Taiwan its territory and has never excluded the use of force against the island.

In an announcement issued by Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs, state-owned energy firm CPC Corporation had signed a letter of intent regarding the Alaska natural gas project in March 2025. According to the ministry, after one year of negotiations and assessment, significant progress has been achieved by the company and its American partners.
Under the present scheme, Taiwan would procure 6 million metric tonnes of LNG annually and become involved in developing the project. The investment could run into $4.4 billion.
According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs, if the project goes ahead as planned, it can start delivering natural gas to Taiwan from 2032.
Taiwan claimed that long-term procurement of energy and investment in the project can help in diversifying its sources of natural gas and give flexibility in securing energy supply and increase energy cooperation between the two countries.
The ministry also noted that the plan is based on mutual benefits and professional assessment. Details regarding the investment structure, ownership and other business aspects will be finalized during negotiations and contractual proceedings.
