The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police will now be under the leadership of Additional Inspector General of Police (AIG) Shyam Lal Gyawali, as per the recent decision made during a cabinet meeting held on Friday. This appointment comes following a ministerial announcement regarding the reshuffling within the police department.
Former CIB director AIG Kiran Bajracharya has been reassigned to the operations department at the police headquarters, relinquishing his previous role. This change comes amidst concerns raised by a high-level commission investigating gold smuggling, which highlighted significant deficiencies in the investigative process.
The commission’s findings underscored serious shortcomings in the handling of the gold smuggling investigation, leading to recommendations for disciplinary actions against CIB chief Bajracharya, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjay Singh Thapa, and Deputy Superintendents of Police (DSPs) Rugam Kunwar and Durga Dahal.
