Real Madrid’s Spanish-born attacker Brahim Diaz has decided to play for Morocco at the international level, foregoing his eligibility to represent Spain, according to Spanish media outlets.

Marca newspaper reports that the Malaga-born player opted for Morocco, the country of his paternal grandfather, due to a perceived lack of interest from Spanish football authorities. The 24-year-old reportedly held out hope for a call-up from Spain until the last moment, but the invitation never arrived.

Diaz has a history of representing Spain at youth levels, playing for the U17, U19, and U21 sides. He even earned a cap for Spain’s senior team in a June 2021 international friendly against Lithuania, a match Spain won 4-0.
