The Philadelphia Phillies are expected to appoint Don Mattingly as their permanent manager for the 2027 season, with the franchise reportedly preparing to remove the interim tag from his title. Don Mattingly Expected to Become Philadelphia Phillies’ Full-Time Manager for 2027 Season
The Philadelphia Phillies are reportedly preparing to appoint Don Mattingly as their permanent manager for the 2027 MLB season after his successful stint as interim manager. According to The Athletic, the franchise is expected to make the decision official soon, removing the interim designation from the 65-year-old’s title. Mattingly took charge in April after the Phillies dismissed Rob Thomson following a disappointing 9-19 start to the 2026 campaign.
The change in leadership helped Philadelphia regain its footing, as the team recorded 79 wins and 55 losses under Mattingly to secure a postseason berth. However, the Phillies struggled again late in the regular season, winning just three of their final nine games before suffering elimination at the hands of the Atlanta Braves in the National League Wild Card Series. Mattingly also faced criticism for some of his in-game decisions, particularly his handling of the bullpen during the team’s late-season slump.
