The Press Council of India (PCI) has issued fresh guidelines for journalists covering protests and demonstrations, asking media personnel to carry valid identity cards, follow ethical reporting practices, keep first-aid kits handy and plan escape routes in case of danger.

The advisory comes days after journalists reported being detained or injured while covering the October 10 protests in Delhi, triggering concerns over the safety of media personnel on the ground.

The guidelines, adopted at a PCI meeting on October 14, 2026, and issued on October 15, 2026, seek to “facilitate the effective discharge of journalistic duties while promoting the safety of media personnel, responsible reporting and better coordination among journalists, media organisations and law enforcement authorities,” the Council said.
