Kathmandu's Thamel and Durbarmarg

The government of Nepal is preparing to open the popular Thamel and Durbarmarg areas of Kathmandu for 24-hour business operations. This initiative follows instructions from Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane.

Chief District Officer Jitendra Basnet has met with stakeholders to ensure a smooth transition, emphasizing security measures and fair pricing practices for businesses. The District Security Committee has developed a plan to address potential security concerns.

“We will implement an integrated plan, adapting as needed after the markets open,” said Basnet.

Business leaders expressed support for the move. Thamel Tourism Development Council Chairman Bhabishwor Sharma sees this as a long-awaited opportunity. Durbarmarg Development Board Treasurer Sanjay Adhikari believes the change is appropriate and calls for turning Durbarmarg into a night-walk area.

The new policy is expected to take effect within a week.
