Tehran – Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian has reiterated his country’s commitment to prioritizing dialogue to protect its rights, but warned that being open to negotiations does not mean surrender.
In an interview published on his office’s website, Pezeshkian defended the Iranian government’s decision to sign a memorandum of understanding with the United States and enter into negotiations to end the war.
He stated, ‘As long as the United States fulfills its commitments under the memorandum, Iran will remain committed to its obligations. If they fail to fulfill their commitments, we will have no obligation to move forward.’
Earlier this week, Pezeshkian denied rumors that he would resign from his position, saying, ‘He will continue his work with determination.’
These comments come amid rumors of ‘divisions’ within Iran’s leadership regarding the memorandum. In June, Iran and the United States signed the memorandum, which set a 60-day timeline for negotiations to reach a final agreement. However, the future of the talks remains uncertain due to increased tensions between the two sides.
