New Delhi: The Delhi Police has de-notified Jantar Mantar as a designated venue for protests and demonstrations, naming Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground in East Delhi as the three alternative locations for organising public gatherings, according to an official notice.

The decision marks a significant change in Delhi’s long-standing arrangement for public demonstrations, with Jantar Mantar having served as a prominent site for political protests, dharnas and public campaigns. The move is aimed at shifting demonstrations to alternative locations and easing traffic congestion and disruptions in central Delhi, particularly around key government offices and high-security zones.

According to the notice, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had constituted a committee to examine alternative venues where citizens could exercise their right to organise protests and demonstrations. Based on the committee’s recommendations, Jantar Mantar has now been de-notified as a designated protest venue.
