Nepali Congress President Gagan Kumar Thapa has stated that the ideas and decisions of Jananayak BP Koirala should not be interpreted by leaders solely for their own convenience and gain.
Speaking at the formal launch of the book ‘BP and the Days of Rebellion’ written by author Dharma Gautam, Thapa emphasized that BP Koirala was not just a political party leader, but a great thinker who could see beyond his time.
Thapa highlighted that BP Koirala’s decision to adopt the policy of national reconciliation in 2033 BS was a historic decision that was linked to the then-prevailing environment, sovereignty, and democratic values and principles.
He expressed his dissatisfaction with the growing trend in today’s politics of using BP Koirala’s name for personal gain and recalling him only when it serves one’s own interests.
Thapa also commented that Nepali Congress leaders have been recalling BP Koirala in the context of ‘national reconciliation’ only when it suits their political needs.
Redefining Political Success
Thapa believes that the definition of political success and failure should not be limited to gaining power or positions.
He recalled the sacrifices and dedication of thousands of loyal workers like author Dharma Gautam, which have made democracy possible in the country today.
Thapa emphasized that evaluating a person’s political worth solely based on their ministerial positions, parliamentary seats, or mayoral roles can lead to the neglect of dedicated politics.
Importance of Historical Records
Thapa stressed that historical books like ‘BP and the Days of Rebellion’ are crucial in passing on the real memories of history and stories of sacrifice to the new generation.
He described such books as important and official documents that help preserve the true accounts of the past.
