B&C Medical College

B&C Medical College, owned by businessman Durga Prasai, has been granted affiliation by Kathmandu University. The college’s official name will be B&C Medical College Teaching Hospital and Research Center, as per a letter issued by Kathmandu University’s Executive Council following their recent meeting.

This affiliation comes after a directive order from the Supreme Court of Nepal. A division bench of Justices Dr. Kumar Chudal and Saranga Subedi mandated Kathmandu University, the Medical Education Commission, and B&C Medical College to comply with government standards set for medical colleges 13 years ago.

The Supreme Court decision, issued on March 25th, 2024, also ordered the enforcement of these standards. The government established these standards on April 6th, 2012.

The affiliation process for B&C Medical College has been ongoing for several years. The Nepal Medical Council conducted an on-site inspection in November 2016, and Kathmandu University was tasked with ensuring the college met all requirements. B&C Medical College submitted an initial application to Kathmandu University for affiliation in February 2017.

Following the implementation the Medical Education Act in March 2020, the college re-applied for affiliation with the Medical Education Commission. Despite reportedly having the necessary infrastructure, Durga Prasai filed a writ petition against both Kathmandu University and the Commission after affiliation was not granted. The Supreme Court’s order is the result of this petition.
