Actor Imran Khan was detained by Mumbai Police on October 10 during a solidarity protest supporting the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP). The protest was organised in support of the party’s demand for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

Imran’s detention comes nearly three months after he joined a CJP led student protest in Mumbai in July. While the earlier demonstration focused on alleged examination irregularities and students’ demands for education reforms, the October 10 protest centred on voter list revisions and concerns about the deletion of eligible voters’ names.

Why Was Imran Khan Detained In Mumbai?

Mumbai Police detained protesters attempting to reach August Kranti Maidan on October 10, where a solidarity demonstration had been planned in support of CJP’s protest in Delhi. The gathering was organised by Tushar Gandhi, Mahatma Gandhi’s great grandson, and his organisation, Hum Bharat Ke Log.

Before his detention, Imran Khan told ANI, “I don’t have demands. I am here as a citizen, as someone who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted—why people’s voices are being suppressed. That is why I am here. I am not in a position to make demands of anyone. Nor am I part of any organization. I am just here as a representative…”
