A staggering 100,000 kilograms of sugar, worth an estimated 10 million rupees, risks being destroyed after languishing in a Maheshpur Customs Office warehouse in Nawalparasi East-West. The sugar, confiscated by police at border crossings, has been rotting due to delays in the auction process.

“This is a significant waste of resources,” said Buddhi Bahadur Chudal, Head of Maheshpur Customs. “The sugar, seized in 2020 and 2021, should have been auctioned promptly to prevent this situation.”

The sugar’s condition has deteriorated significantly during its extended storage. Authorities are now awaiting test results from the quality department to determine if the sugar is salvageable or must be destroyed. The outcome could lead to further scrutiny of the customs office’s handling of seized goods.
