Maja Chwalinska claimed the biggest title of her career on Sunday, fighting back from a set down to beat Britain’s Sonay Kartal 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 in the Wuhan Open final. The victory gave the Polish left-hander her first WTA Tour title and capped a remarkable run at the WTA 1000 event.
The world no.22 struggled early as Kartal used her powerful forehand to take the opening set. However, the 25-year-old adjusted her approach, drawing her opponent into longer rallies and using changes in direction to disrupt her rhythm. She earned three breaks in the second set to level the match before taking control of the decider.
The Pole then won four games in a row to complete the comeback and secure the title.
