Australia have strengthened their bid for a place in the 2027 World Test Championship (WTC) final after securing a commanding 214-run victory over South Africa in the opening Test at Kingsmead, Durban. Matt Renshaw’s century in the first innings and Josh Hazlewood’s six-wicket haul in the second proved decisive as Australia bowled out the hosts for 206 while defending a target of 421. The win gives the visitors a 1-0 lead in the three-match series and adds further momentum to their WTC campaign.
The result has also strengthened Australia’s grip on top spot in the WTC 2025-27 standings, taking their points percentage to 81.81% after nine wins in 11 matches. South Africa, who entered the contest in second place with an 80% points percentage, have slipped to third at 60%, having now lost two of their five matches in the cycle. With their strong record and growing points tally, Australia have put themselves in a commanding position in the race for the final, although qualification is not yet confirmed.
