Miranda Hart has opened up about her years-long health battle after a mission on The Celebrity Traitors made her realise how far she had come. The comedian revealed that there was a time when she thought she might never even be able to enjoy a gentle walk in a park again.

During the latest episode of the BBC reality show, Hart joined the other contestants in a mission that involved collecting and assembling parts of large statues on a rainy Scottish hillside. “Three or four years ago, due to illness, I thought that I may not ever have a gentle walk around a park again,” Hart said.

What Illness Was Miranda Hart Diagnosed With?

In 2024, Hart revealed that she had been diagnosed with Lyme disease, a bacterial infection that can spread through the bite of an infected tick. She also spoke about living with agoraphobia and myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME), also known as chronic fatigue syndrome.

The illness had a major impact on her life and career. Hart explained that she struggled even while working on her hit sitcom Miranda, which made her a household name.

Speaking at the Cheltenham Literature Festival in 2024, she said, “I lost my joy.” She added, “I know that I hadn’t enjoyed my career in the way that I knew I could have if I hadn’t been ill.”

Hart also revealed that her health took a serious turn after Miranda ended in 2015. “I was housebound and bedbound for years,” she said and added, “I didn’t have a job, I didn’t have a social life. I didn’t have any responsibilities or identities.” She described that period as living “a half life [and] a very debilitated life”.
