The United States will vote in its 2026 midterm elections on Tuesday, November 3, with control of Congress and dozens of state governments at stake. The results will determine the balance of power in Washington for the remainder of President Donald Trump’s term, as voters elect members of the House of Representatives, the Senate and state governments.

All 435 seats in the House and 35 of the Senate’s 100 seats are up for election. Voters in 36 states will also choose their governors. Three US territories are holding gubernatorial elections as well.

Unlike presidential elections, midterms do not decide who occupies the White House. Instead, they determine which party controls Congress and how much influence the president has over legislation, government spending and congressional investigations.

When is Election Day and what are the polling hours?

Election Day falls on November 3, 2026. Polling hours are determined by state and local election authorities, meaning opening and closing times can differ between states and even between counties.

Many polling stations open between 6 am and 8 am local time. Voters should check their assigned polling location and its operating hours through their state or local election office before heading out.

Early voting has already concluded in Texas, where in-person voting ran from October 19 to October 30. North Carolina’s early voting period ended on October 31. Voter identification requirements also vary by state. Those planning to vote in person should check the applicable rules and confirm whether they need to carry identification.
