Iran has raised concerns with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) over alleged interference with VHF Channel 16, the internationally recognised frequency used by ships for distress calls, safety messages and initial contact.
In a letter dated October 9, Tehran alleged that US military personnel had repeatedly used the channel to address Iranian seafarers in threatening language. Iran said the reported transmissions could interfere with emergency communications and put civilian crews at risk.
What Did Iran Tell the IMO?
According to the complaint, some transmissions allegedly urged Iranian crews to abandon their vessels. Tehran argued that occupying the channel for non-safety purposes could delay genuine distress calls.
