Indian equity benchmarks staged a strong recovery on Friday, October 9, as buying in information technology (IT) shares and easing oil prices supported market sentiment. The rebound followed a sharp sell-off in the previous session.
At 2:08 PM, the BSE Sensex gained 990.45 points, or 1.38%, to 72,583.69, while the Nifty 50 advanced 325.60 points, or 1.46%, to 22,557.40. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Apollo Hospitals Enterprise and Max Healthcare Institute were among the leading Nifty 50 gainers. The Nifty IT and FMCG indices recorded the strongest sectoral advances, while metal and pharmaceutical stocks remained under pressure.

GIFT Nifty Signals Positive Opening
GIFT Nifty was trading at 22,355 at 6:59 AM IST, up 123.2 points, or 0.55%, from the previous Nifty 50 close of 22,231.80. The positive indication came after domestic benchmarks declined sharply on October 8. The Nifty 50 fell 371.25 points, or 1.64%, to 22,231.80, while the Sensex dropped 1,045.46 points, or 1.44%, to 71,593.24.
Overnight weakness in US technology stocks and losses across major Asian markets had kept investors cautious ahead of Friday’s session.
TCS Q2 Results Put IT Stocks in Focus
TCS opened the September-quarter earnings season with an increase in profit and revenue, bringing IT stocks into focus. The company reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 13,884 crore for Q2 FY27, up 4% quarter-on-quarter and 15% year-on-year. Revenue rose 11.2% year-on-year to Rs 73,188 crore, while annualised artificial intelligence revenue reached $3.1 billion.
