Actor Imran Khan was detained by Mumbai Police on Saturday at August Kranti Maidan during a protest in support of the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP). His girlfriend Lekha Washington was also among more than 400 people detained across Mumbai as demonstrators gathered against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

August Kranti Maidan was among the locations where the police took action to stop gatherings that had not been authorised.

What Imran Khan Said Before His Detention

Before the police took him away, Imran spoke to news agency ANI about why he had joined the demonstration.

He told ANI, “I don’t have demands. I am here as a citizen, as someone who lives in this city. I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted—why people’s voices are being suppressed. That is why I am here. I am not in a position to make demands of anyone. Nor am I part of any organisation. I am just here as a representative…”

Imran’s cousin Zayn Marie was detained as well. She shared a video recorded inside the police van, adding the caption, “Ranjhore Ka Rathod???’ sooo close.”

The reference took fans back to Imran’s first film as a lead actor, Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na. He played Jay Singh Rathore in the 2008 romantic comedy, which includes a memorable sequence involving his character in jail.
