When Pope Leo XIV stood at the window of the Apostolic Palace on Sunday and told the thousands of faithful gathered in St Peter’s Square that doctors had found a nodule in his lung “at a very early stage,” the calm with which he delivered the news was itself reassuring to those who heard it.
Two days later, the reassurance was qualified by a harder truth.
Pope Leo XIV underwent surgery on Tuesday to remove the lower lobe of his right lung, and doctors confirmed a diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma, the Vatican announced Tuesday evening. The operation lasted 90 minutes and Leo spent approximately three hours in the operating room at the Agostino Gemelli University Hospital in Rome. “Following the operation, the Pope woke up normally and, after a brief period of observation, returned to his room on the tenth floor,” the Vatican said in a statement.

“Intraoperative histological examination confirmed the diagnosis of pulmonary adenocarcinoma, as suspected from pre-operative tests,” the Vatican said in its medical bulletin.
The Vatican did not release information about the staging of the cancer, nor did it disclose whether the Pope would undergo further treatment or what his prognosis is. Leo is expected to remain at Gemelli for up to one week as he recovers.
Who Is Pope Leo XIV And Why Is His Health Significant?
Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago in 1955, Leo became the first American pope when he was elected leader of the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics on 8 May 2025, succeeding Pope Francis, who died on 21 April 2025 at the age of 88 after spending weeks at Gemelli Hospital.
At 71 years old, Leo is relatively young for a pope, and remains physically active. The American pope had no previously known health problems and is known to be physically active, with weekly tennis games and swimming at the papal summer retreat in Castel Gandolfo. This is the first significant health episode of his sixteen-month pontificate.
Leo called US President Donald Trump’s threat to destroy Iran “truly unacceptable.” Trump responded by calling the pontiff “WEAK on Crime, and terrible for Foreign Policy,” and Leo replied that he had a “moral duty to speak out.” Since his election, he has spoken on artificial intelligence, armed conflict and social justice, issuing his first encyclical in May 2026.
What Exactly Is Lung Adenocarcinoma?
The name sounds technical but the condition it describes is, in the landscape of cancer medicine, well-mapped territory.
Lung adenocarcinoma is classified within the broader category of non-small cell lung cancer, which comprises roughly 85 per cent of all lung malignancies. Adenocarcinoma of the lung is the most common form of lung cancer in the United States, representing about 40 per cent of all lung cancers, according to the Lung Cancer Foundation of America.
It is a cancer that originates in the glandular cells lining the airways, cells designed to produce mucus, and it tends to grow in the outer regions of the lung rather than at its centre. While smoking remains the biggest single cause of lung cancer, adenocarcinoma is the subtype most frequently diagnosed in non-smokers, particularly women. A defining epidemiological feature of lung adenocarcinoma is its high prevalence among never-smokers, women, younger patients and individuals of East Asian descent, in whom specific driver mutations are substantially enriched.
