Veteran Nepali Singer Yogesh Vaidya Passes Away at 77

Kathmandu, January 19, 2024 — The Nepali music industry is mourning the loss of a legendary figure as veteran singer and musician Yogesh Vaidya bid his final farewell on Thursday at the age of 77.

According to the grieving family, Vaidya took his last breath at 12:30 am on Friday while en route to the Sundhara-based Kathmandu Valley Hospital. The family revealed that the singer, who had been battling diabetes for an extended period, encountered health complications in the afternoon. Subsequently, he was urgently transported to the hospital as his condition worsened during the night.

The late Vaidya, who had recently undergone a kidney transplant, was also grappling with issues of paralysis. Despite his health challenges, Vaidya’s enduring passion for music persisted until the end.

Yogesh Vaidya had etched his name in the annals of Nepali music history with iconic songs like ‘Sapana Bhulaye Saara,’ ‘Mero Aanshumaa Nahanse,’ and ‘Nepal Mero Timilai Upahar Bhayo.’ His soulful renditions resonated with fans, and his contribution to the Nepali and Nepal Bhasa music was unparalleled.

Born in 2003 BS in Nardevi, Kathmandu, Vaidya led a multifaceted life. He spent 33 years in civil service, attaining the rank of joint secretary before his retirement in 2005. Vaidya held a master’s degree in food and nutrition from Ghent University, Belgium, showcasing his academic prowess alongside his musical talents.

Throughout his illustrious career, Yogesh Vaidya received numerous accolades, including the first prize at the National Song Conference, the Chhinnalata Song Prize, and various other honors in recognition of his musical and literary achievements.

The revered artist is survived by two daughters and a son, who now bear the legacy of their father’s musical prowess.

To pay homage to the departed soul, Yogesh Vaidya’s mortal remains will be placed at the Nepal Academy of Music and Drama in Naxal for tributes. The final rites will be conducted at the Pashupati Aryaghat in the afternoon, allowing friends, family, and admirers to bid a final farewell to the legendary musician. The void left by Yogesh Vaidya’s passing will be deeply felt in the hearts of music enthusiasts and the Nepali community at large.
