KATHMANDU – The Nepal Police Headquarters has issued a statement acknowledging and addressing the mistreatment of monks during a demonstration in Bhadrakali, Kathmandu, on Saturday. The statement indicates that departmental action is being taken against the police personnel involved in the incident.
The incident occurred during a protest led by Rajendra Mahato, where demonstrators from various ethnic and religious communities demanded the declaration of a ‘plural nation’. As police attempted to disperse the crowd, a video circulated on social media showing a monk being mistreated by officers, leading to widespread criticism.
In response, the Nepal Police Headquarters released a statement expressing serious concern over the incident.
Kathmandu Police Spokesperson, Superintendent of Police (SP) Nawaraj Adhikari, explained that force was used after protestors became aggressive and attacked police officers. SP Adhikari reported that constable Ramsingh Bohora sustained a broken nose and is currently receiving treatment in the ICU.
