India, US Seek to Finalize Trade Deal, with Implications for Nepal
India and the United States have pledged to expand cooperation in trade, defense, technology and energy security while working to finalize a proposed bilateral trade agreement. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and US Secretary of State Marco Rubio discussed bilateral ties and regional and global developments in Mumbai on Tuesday. Rubio said the deal was nearing completion, with only a few technical issues remaining. The agreement could have implications for Nepal, whose imports rely heavily on India. Changes in Indian trade flows, prices, energy arrangements or supply chains resulting from closer US-India economic ties could affect Nepal’s import costs and market stability, although the impact will depend on the agreement’s final terms.
